How to knead dough
Super Food Ideas Food Editor Kim Coverdale takes you through the delicate process of kneading dough so you make the perfect loaf, every time!
Once you've made a basic dough (you can follow this recipe for step-by-step bread dough), turn it out onto a lightly floured surface.
Knead the dough for 10 to 15 minutes or until it's smooth and elastic. Kneading by hand is a simple process of folding the dough towards you, then pushing it away from you with the heel of your hand. Continue, turning clockwise with each fold - you'll know it's ready if it springs back when pressed with your fingertip.
Place the dough in a large, lightly-greased bowl. Cover and set it aside in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
Using your fist, punch the dough down to remove any air bubbles caused by the yeast. Knead until smooth.
Follow the rest of your recipe to completion.
